Evaluation of websites.

Today, I did more!

I evaluated 3 more websites on my research topic and discovered more about internet resources. The template used was similar to the one used previously but this time, the websites are different. The first site is the same as the previous one from Practical 6, which is a news and information site while the second site is an online encyclopedia. For the third one, it is quite unusual as it is a discussion forum which information may not be true or relevant at times.

For the online encyclopedia, the one i researched on is WIKIPEDIA, which is an online service that users can upload information and other users can edit and share it around. From evaluation, i realised that the information may not be relevant and sometimes out-dated when no users come and edit it. Most of the information are also based on personal opinions and may not be true.

This applies to the third website too, which is a discussion forum where users post messages on their own perception and other users reply to the discussed topic. The information provided may also not be accurate and most of the time, out-dated when no one replies to the topic.

Such an interesting websites that I've found!

Hi everyone!

I am back after a term break and now I am working really hard for the last semester of year 1.

Just finished my Practical 6 which is the evaluating the website that I researched on previously. I realised that the website that I found my resources is actually so informative and easy to use. From coverage to accessibility and also to the presentation of the informations in the site. I did not realise that the site has features like search facility, site map and also gateways only until I did the evaluation and found that they are available on the site.

This has been a great experience for me!

Back with another day of useful information from UIR lesson!

Today's lesson was quite a fast one as what we did was to discuss on the different purposes of internet resources. Then we continued our research from the previous lesson, and I've finally completed my practical!

So our next task was to join a discussion forum on the research topic that we are doing.
It is so tedious! It was either the forum that I was looking for has been left stagnant for years and months or they are not relevant at all. However, instead of using normal search engines, i used the meta search engine to find my discussion forum.

It was a success! I got the relevant forum and I joined it.

Here's the URL:

http://www.youngpap.org.sg/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=161506#161506

this is a Singapore forum that is opened to the public for those who want to comment on the haze issue that affects Singapore and other neighbouring countries.

It is such an eye opener for me as this is my first time joining a discussion forum and see so many people gather together on the net to discuss on a topic. Bascially, I've learnt alot from the people in the forum as I learnt about their views and what they think Singapore should do to resolve this problem.

It is a good way for people from anywhere with the same opinions to come together and discuss about it. Therefore, I'll actually go and join certain discussion forums which I am interested in such as music.

Yep.
more to come next week!

Another UIR lesson today.
Had the class quiz online!

I scored 11 out of 15!

After the quiz, we are supposed to carry on with the searching of our topic since last practical.

We are suppose to make use of the usual search engines, meta search engines and subject directories to find out more information on my our research topic. It is my first time knowing that actually there are meta search engines and subject directories for us to find information on the net, and to my surprise, they are fast enough to give me all the desired answer within seconds!

Amongst the above search engines, i would prefer the meta search engine if you are talking about speed and the accurate information wise. It actually shows which search engine it got its information from. The meta search engine i used was, www.metacrawler.com .

Eventhough the amount of resources found are not as much as the other search engines, but most of them are more or less relevant. As this is the first time i am using it, I was pleased at the results.

However, talking about meeting my research needs, I think the subject directories fit the bill for this. As most of the results are relevant and they are more informative than the meta search engine as the latter also provide information of personal webpage on my research topic besides the relevant results I want.

Basically, all three search engines made my life easier when searching for certain topic on the net.

Some examples of the search engines that I've used for research,

1. Search engine : www.google.com.sg

2. Meta search engine: www.metacrawler.com

3. Subject directory: www.go.com

yea!

shall update more next week!

My third entry today.

Another UIR lesson,
another researching skill learnt.

we are suppose to research for another 4 more resources for the previous practical topic.
This time I did it in a breeze.

It was quite easy for me to search on the internet search engine now,
as I have been doing this for a few weeks.
I know what specific keyword to type in in order to get a perfect answer I want.

Besides learning how to do research using the internet,
I have also learnt more about the research topic that I was doing.
For example, what i did was 'Haze affecting Asian economies'.

And from all those researching I have done over the weeks,
I am sure I have learnt alot about how haze affect besides Singapore's but other neighbouring countries economies.

Furthermore, during UIR lesson today.
we have learnt about how to improve our blog by adding links of our classmates!
Its my first time dealing with HTML codes, and it looks easy to me.

I will stop here now,
more to come next week...

Another day of UIR lesson.

Today, we were told to use the search engines on the internet to research on certain topics.
I choose 'Impacts of Haze on Asian economies'.

It was quite an easy topic to research on compared to the other topics like,
'Latest trends of music for teenagers' and so on.

Basically, you just have to type in 'Haze affecting SEA economies' or 'Haze in Asia',
you will get the answer you want easily.
The search engine I used was www.yahoo.sg, my favourite search engine that I always use.
It make my researchings easy, as all the information you are searching will be able to be found.

It was interesting for me to do a research on such a topic.
I feel like an economist or a Buisness school student working on the economic trends.

Besides finding the websites to the topic, I search on a forum too.
It was a forum which everyone is there to talk about the haze affecting Singaporeans and our economy.
It was an eye-opener to me as I have never seen so many people come together to comment on a common topic in an internet forum.

All in all, this lesson had made me gain alot of knowledge on researching, and it will definitely benefit me in future major projects!

See you next week!

Hi everyone!
I am Leslie!
I am currently in School of Applied Science and taking a diploma of Biomedical Science year 1.

Actually, this is not my first time setting up a blog.
I have a personal blog that I will update almost everyday.
I would write rant about unhappy things and also share with my blog readers happy moments that happen to me on that day.

Therefore, this blog is no exception!
I will update here with fun experience and interesting things that I have learnt every week after my UIR lessons.
=)

OK, back to introducing myself.

I have an undying passion towards music and singing!
It all started off with my father.
He was the first person who inspired me, who taught me how to sing, who taught me how to groove to the music and as well as taught me to be a great performer!

It really helps me a lot.
I was able to have confidence standing in front of many people.
I do go for singing competitions and performance organised by secondary school
and even now, I joined Talent Quest in TP!

yep =D

Now, for the two favourite links that I will always visit:

www.yes933.sg - the best chinese radio station in Singapore!

www.hutdugaikarsui.blogspot.com - the funniest S'pore blogger! Comics strip!

so thats all for today...
more updates on the next entry!
see you!
